Ever since I was a child, I have aspired to be a teacher. Thinking back, this passion was kindled by teachers who have guided and made significant impact on my life. My teachers have helped me in many ways: sharpening my thinking, inspiring me and moulding my character through my growing years.

However, as I entered the workforce, I forgot my initial dream of becoming an educator. Daunted by the demands of life, I joined the rat race.  Yet, despite having a rewarding job, I knew that deep within me, something was missing. There seemed to be a void that I could not fill.

Fortunately, my initial dream was rekindled when my career took me to new roles- firstly in an International School, and subsequently in one of the leading enrichment centres in Singapore. Somehow, something clicked, and I became determined to stay within the education industry.

I felt a spark reignite within me! Years of industry experience, my childhood dreams and my own experience as a mother, all started to fall in place. For the first time, I felt ready to reach out to students, to nurture and inspire them to be the best that they could be, and to encourage them to have the courage to pursue their dreams. I feel strongly that the bottom line of education is more than just about profits. Engaging students to learn meaningfully and effectively will pave the path for academic success. Equally crucial is nurturing them to have the necessary grit, and to be emotionally and mentally resilient. Though these areas are difficult to measure, I believe they should be part of the key success indicators of an enrichment centre.

Finally, I mustered enough courage to pursue my dreams and set up my own enrichment centre. The key to ignite a student’s learning is the Teacher. A great teacher will transform a student’s learning journey beyond academic excellence. Therefore, I am extremely stringent in my selection of teachers. Not only must they be pedagogically sound, they must also have a genuine passion and love for teaching.

I also firmly believe in reading and drama-infused language programmes. They set the stage in developing a child’s confidence, creative thinking skills and ability to discover and enhance their own, as well as their teammates’ strengths. All these factors are key attributes to success.

I have been blessed to find rare talents like Brenda, Chloe, Wilfred and Ee Hoon to be the Heads of English, Maths, Science and Chinese respectively. We share the same vision that enrichment should be run with a Big Heart to help students achieve beyond academic excellence, cultivate the right values and attitudes to succeed in life. As a team, we believe customization is necessary to unleash the potential of every student. We adopt a “whatever it takes” approach and teachers are empowered to pursue various strategies and techniques when teaching a student.  

I am grateful to have our pioneer students and their parents who trust and support us in making this dream come true. Together, we can look forward to an extraordinary learning journey.
坚持初衷,不忘初心

每个人一定都会做过这样一道命题作文:我的志愿。 我记得当时踌躇满志,无比坚定地写上:我要成为伟大的灵魂工程师 -老师。我一向深受老师的眷顾和启发,就好像成为老师是再自然不过的事。

然而,我并没有坚持我的梦想。我成了一名会计师,成天跟数字和账目打交道,也一步步登上事业的阶梯。可是我并不满足,而这份遗憾与待遇无关。我事业的转捩点始于八年前。我负责的企业项目是一所知名的国际学校。那是我第一次跟这么多教育工作者,学生和家长有频繁的接触,给了我小小的震撼。接着,我在一所顶尖的辅助中心担任要职,负责监督科程编排,招聘,训练与各个行政部门的运作,忙碌的程度也是空前绝后的。

去年,我毅然辞职。除了我的先生,所有的人都持反对票。我决定遵从内心最真实的想法,开办我理想的辅助中心。我的理念很简单。我认为每个学生都是单独的个体。我们必须结合最优秀的教师和具有创意,丰富的教学内容,在提高学业成绩的当儿,也要他们掌握良好的价值观与生活技能。在学习语文课程中,阅读和戏剧表演是不可或缺的。我们的阅读形式崇尚双向沟通,尊重与学生的互动,以鼓励他们多思考和灵活地运用语言 。通过戏剧,即兴创作,对提高创意写作,培养个人自信与魅力更有着潜移默化的作用。

我何其有幸,遇到了何老师,连老师,赵老师和郑老师。他们不仅有丰富学术上的知识与经验,更保有对教育的热忱,不计付出,只为见证学生的成长,发挥最大的潜能。我们有共同的目标与理念,最大的动力与满足感源自学生的学习路程。我们视成功逆转学生学习的障碍,帮他们循序渐进地取得佳绩,突破个人设限为最佳的回报。

Painting pictures with words – igniting passion through dynamic teaching and thought-provoking materials
Club Focus

Every month, we anchor our Club Focus on a given theme. Interesting and thought-provoking articles and videos are introduced to the students. These articles and videos serve as a platform for us to have lively discussions with the students and for us to teach grammar and vocabulary in context.  Through these discussions, we spark the students’ curiosity about the world, and hone their ability to reason and articulate their views confidently.

Drama for Deepening Understanding

Mastery of a language is much more than just grammar and vocabulary. Often, students struggle with comprehension passages and composition writing because of their limited understanding of the world rather than their lack of language skills. Drama is a very powerful teaching tool as it helps students to make sense of the world in a more concrete and explicit manner. More importantly, learning English through the use of drama makes it a lot more fun and engaging for the students.

Customized Approach towards Composition Writing

Different students have different learning gaps and writing abilities. Having a small class size allows the teacher to close the learning gaps of each student and to level them up using different strategies and materials.

Structured Approach for Oral Examination Preparation

Students will be taught explicit reading skills like the 4Ps (Pitch, Pace, Pauses and Power). Curriculum will also be set aside for students to practise their Stimulus-Based Conversation so that the students build up their content knowledge of the different topics.

Sharpening Examination-Taking Skills

For students to do well in their examinations, not only do they need mastery of the English Language, but also need good examination-taking skills. The English Examination consists of many components and the teachers will go through all components with the students so that they will be confident in handling them. The teachers will also guide the students on how to best handle each component through useful tips, techniques and frequent practices.

Story Telling

The power of story telling and sharing is exponential. Picture books are carefully selected in consideration of the lesson themes and ability of our students. Through a highly interactive story-telling approach whereby students get to immerse themselves in the story through role-play and discussions, we help students to overcome their fear of the Chinese language, and to be interested in Chinese eventually. By capturing the interest of our students and exposing them to an array of text types, we help our students to develop their ability to recognise, read, infer and express themselves fluently.  Listening Comprehension types of questions and techniques are always integrated within the story telling session in a fun manner through games and competitions. The ability to express one’s opinion and infer the moral of a story is crucial when answering free response questions in the Comprehension component

Club Focus

Similar to our English programme, we engage our students effectively with our monthly theme of topics. These themes are weaved into Orals and Composition Writing seamlessly to help students internalize the mandatory vocabulary list associated with each theme. Where applicable, we will cross reference materials between the English and Chinese programmes so that students will be receptive to Chinese at the initial stage. Articles including the latest news and global trends will be customized based on our students’ proficiency levels to promote acceptance and appreciation of the language. This will pave the way for a highly intellectual and engaging conversation which are key attributes for Oral testing

1 to 1 Approach towards Composition Writing

To build the foundation for good writing skills, we adopt a hybrid model for Chinese enrichment where students have at least an additional hour of 1 to 1 coaching from the teacher

Mathemagical Secrets

Every new concept introduced is preceded by a class discussion called “Mathemagical Secrets” whereby students take ownership of new knowledge by discovering the magic behind why a formula or a method works.

Curriculum Specialist

Every worksheet is designed to achieve a specific learning objective. Our experienced Curriculum Specialist is deeply familiar with the common misconceptions and areas of difficulties that students typically face.

Mastery Handouts

Mastery Handouts are thoughtfully designed with careful scaffolding and deliberate chunking of concepts.

#Scaffolding and chunking are terms used in educational psychology whereby the former refers to support and demonstrations provided before a student is taught something new, while the latter refers to the breaking down of skills into smaller chunks so that students are able to learn a challenging skill..

Individualised Lesson Plans

A wide variety of handouts is designed to facilitate flexible and individualised lesson plans for each student based on different schools’ trends as well as individual learning pace and areas of weakness.

Comprehensive Worksheets

Comprehensive worksheets to facilitate understanding and internalizing concepts using a range of carefully curated Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Free Response Questions (FRQ) from our extensive database.

Exam Answering Techniques

Develop and train students to tackle exam answering techniques, such as using the relevant key words and adopting a template for free response, experiment-based and application questions.

Fun Experiments

Introduce experiments and fun components during holidays where students are guided to develop skills on observation, interpretation and analysis. This will not only train students to answer experiment-based questions, but more importantly,  enables them to associate science concepts to real-life application. Students will also be tasked to present their findings, enabling them to hone their oral communication and presentation skills and further reinforcing concept mastery.

After eons of ditching the textbooks, I had to plow through materials to learn, and with much grit, guided her through P3 and 4.  As she progressed to P5, the syllabus got tougher and seeking professional help seems inevitable.

      Wai Ling’s vision of The Learners’ Club (TLC) seems aligned with what I was looking for. Miss Brenda, an unusually animated teacher, has a way to create lively discussions and provide insights beyond the textbook, which Trixie benefitted in terms of oral, writing and better comprehending passages.
Trixie is currently enrolled in all subjects. Over the last six months, other than feedback and guidance on academics, advice and strategies were constantly given on how to better manage stress and time. It is heartening to see Trixie growing to be more resilient and exhibiting a keen interest in all subjects. She is less resistant to Chinese and Math (which used to be her two most dreaded subjects).
      In addition, my sister and I witnessed her conversing Mandarin in a more confident manner. Her ability to tackle challenging Math questions has also leveled up. I’m thankful for the committed and dedicated teachers at TLC. So, here’s a shout out to Wai Ling, Brenda, Miss Wong, Chloe and Wilfred! The journey to PSLE is going to be arduous but I’m glad to have you guys walking the journey with Trixie!"
